Frequency-response Calibration

It is commonly believed that the effects associated with binaural entrainment are due solely to the difference between the frequencies of the right- and left-channels and that the values of these carrier frequencies are not significant. This preset supplies evidence that this is not necessarily the case.

In addition, consider a binarural preset created by an author for whom an 80 Hz monaural tone stimulates the region where the nose intersects with the eye-line. A listener for whom 80 Hz stimulates the middle of the forehead would probably not observe the same effects for that preset: their respective heads do not react the same. This might explain why one person's 5-star preset has little effect on another. If this is the case, then lists correlating frequency to effect need to be normalized to account for each person's individual harmonics before they can be of general use.

In the attached JPEG map, the lines associated with 50 and 60 Hz indicate that these frequencies stimulate not only the bridge of nose, but also the mouth and chin, respectively. The wireframe head in the map is taken from the Poser(R) application by Curious Labs.

The 7.5 Hz noise-sweep in the preset is provided for aesthetic and pedagogical reasons; it serves no other apparent function.

Are you suggesting that each person should use a preset such as this one to find their frequency sequence so that they can adjust all of their presets to suit? Or is the 'map' meant to apply to everyone? Also, is this preset meant to sweep through the nodes you have mentioned, or does it just stimulate one node, and you change it manually?

The purpose of this preset is to allow each user to determine his individual response to a given frequency by finding an associated location on his body. If both author and user have the same response, then it is likely that what works for one will work for the other. On the other hand, a major difference between the two would indicate that adjustments may be called-for. By comparing the maps of both author and user, the direction of the adjustment may be determined. The map provided is merely an example using this author's responses (and an approximate one, at that). This preset provides only one frequency: 80Hz. To change the frequency, use Preset Options button > A: Sound > Audible Pitch > Edit pulldown. It is recommended that the Modulation be left at 10Hz so that everyone is using the same settings. By being exposed to a single frequency at a time, one may halt playback as soon as the location for a frequency has been determined, speeding up the process of stepping through the frequencies. Be aware that this is a monaural preset and does not necessarily provide a correlation to the effect of binaural frequencies. It is simply a tool to determine a possible course of action should a highly-rated preset not seem effective.
