Depression 2

Depression - Anxiety - OCD - Panic Attacks

I have found this a useful preset for my condition of SAD/depression with anxiety. As I write this, I have been listening to the preset for about 30 minutes. 30 minutes ago I my head was all over the place, this is because I have not taken my medication for 3 days. I have been prescribed Effexor (Venlafaxine) which makes more serotonin and norepinephrine available in the brain. As some of you may know there tends to be very adverse reactions when medication is missed, tapered down or stopped. Lethargy, depression, confusion, agitation, anxiety, and rushing feelings in the head are apparent. Heart palpitations can also co-inside with the head rushes. That is what I have experienced today. Now 30 minutes after listening to this I feel calm, relaxed but confident and the head shocks/rushes and palpitations have decreased to the point where there virtually aren't any.

Please don't follow my example and stop any medication without your doctors knowledge. I am only making this available with the intention that the persons to use it are those that have not yet started any medical treatment or have recently ceased and would like to try something as an alternative.

I would any comments posted here or email me: [email protected]

I have taken Zoloft off and on for a year. I can tell you what has helped me was using a light and sound machined. BW Gen is great, take it to the next level with a light and sound machine.

what is used in the preset, like beta, alpha and what frequencies?

I know its difficult but trying not to think about the condition was the biggest aid in "washing away" my anxiety/depression. I used to be obsessed with it and it became a destructive cycle. There is a discernable pattern of thoughts in many people that can be broken down and alleviating self-diagnosis and mental-disease hypochodria (sounds funny but very true) was the most important thing for me to do, now I'm fine (a few years).

How long should I listen to this preset on a daily basis? When is the best time to listen? Thank you.

My boyfriend has depression coupled with social anxiety and is on Paxil. I have only seen him without the medication briefly and don't know how severe it is, although it did not seem that bad during that brief period. Would you recommend this preset to help wean him from medication (with a physician's approval, of course). Are there any presets that can help to relieve the withdrawal symptoms? You can put replies here or e-mail me. Thanks in advance.

PS I've been helping him with the social anxiety and he's made HUMONGOUS improvement just by hanging out with me and my friends. If you have a friend with social anxiety, the very best thing that can be done for them is encouragement and coaxing. Don't force them to have a social life, but gently ease them into one.

Hi Janelle (everyone else),

Every person is different in genetics & physiology, so therefore I'm not going to suggest that withdrawing from medication is the best option. On the other hand, I'm not saying that taking medication is the best option either. The medical profession hand out far too many antidepressants and other psychoactive medicines. Take a look at how much the figures for such prescriptions have increased in the last 10-15 years. And this is not just isolated it is world wide. I don't think that 100s of millions more people around the world have suddenly become "ill". Some people may want a quick fix and doctors are happy to oblige. Also the drugs companies are profit motivated. They've got sales reps visiting every doctor and medical establishment "selling" their products - for profit. Remember they have shareholders who expect returns.
I honestly think that the best you can do is at least try to wean your boyfriend off any medication. He may experience some withdrawal effects. Don't worry about this as the drugs companies (and probably your doctor) say that this isn't a sign of addiction to the drug! He may experience fatigue, night sweats, loss of sleep / or want more sleep and will almost certainly get regular fleeting feelings of a rushing or electrical surges in his head. If this happens it is probably better that he goes "cold turkey". I say this in his best interest as it may take him years to be weaned of them. Support him through it, go for walks, have him take st. johns wort (this has no withdrawal effects), take in plenty of sunshine, do some cardiovascular exercise regularly to encourage his brain to "rewire" itself with his natural brain opiates. It comes down to a lifestyle review. Encourage him to do the above. Listen to this preset to see if it helps. Do pilates, yoga, tai-chi, mediation, etc. Don't drink any alcohol (that is a brain depressant), stay off sugary and refined foods, eat natural sugars in fruit and vegetables.
I suppose just help him choose that best for him. What works for one may not work for the next.
Good Luck,
Paul.

I'd like to mention my other preset "Antidepressant". It is the one next to this in the Treatment section. There seems to have been a better response to that preset and from my own personal experience the different combination of frequencies with the inclusion of higher frequencies seems to give a better effect.

Stay well!
Paul.

Paul, one should never quit an antidepressant cold turkey. I was taking one in 1986, and had an allergic reaction (harmless, it turned me beet red from head to toe). My doctor had me quit the med abrubtly, and in 3 days I was in the hospital with a suicidal depression. If you want to quit one of these meds, it is best to taper off slowly.

David,
Thanks for letting us know about your unfortunate episode with the medication. I'm sorry it happened and hope that you are now well again after all these years.
However I must stand by the point I made to Janelle. There are many people that have suicidal behaviour triggered by taking antidepressant medication, and not by coming off them or even "cold turkey". There has been many reports that a certain drug company with a billion dollar product SSRI type drug held back some information when journalists tried to obtain eveidence of problems during the drugs trials. I don't know what medication you took in the mid-80s. Maybe Prozac, but as that was the only SSRI available at that time, probably something else like a tricyclic or MAO Inhibitor. These older drugs caused many more side effects than the newer SSRI type. As said before everyone has a different brain "makup" and genetic physiology. That's why many people go the their doctor and may be prescribed more than one type of drug, to see which one works. Some may get lucky and hit on one straight away, for some several may be tried. That's my point eveyone's different, even a doctor will admit that, so try a few different drugs. I'm sorry to sound harsh, but what happened to you may not happen to another 99% of people, yet 1.1% may get suicidal by just popping a pill. These are not real figures - I'm just making a point. Yeah sure try to tapper of them - I've heard stories of people that take months or even years to do it. They eventually take liquid a/d to take as little as 1-2mg a day- yet still cannot give up completely because of severe withdrawal. I'm not advising people to go cold turkey, at least not at first. Try to tapper then take it from there.

I just wanted to mention that I had the exact same probles as Pual with Effexor. I had to quit suddenly because I lost my medical insurance and could not afford to see a Dr and renew my Effexor perscription. I was also suffered the same symptons including sucidal depression and a feeling like I was getting electrical shocks through out my body. All is well with me now, but please don't do this yourself. I found out from someone else who was taken off effexor by a Dr that they have a special pack they give you that gradualy reduces the amount over a period of a month. So do NOT just quit this cold turkey, its worse than kicking most illegal drugs, just take my word for it please!

Thanks Chris,
Maybe I should clarify my position on a/d medications.
I am not completely advocating that people should go "cold turkey" and suddenly stop taking medication without speaking to the GP first. The underlying problem that needs to be addressed is the problem many people have in coming off a/d's, whether cold turkey or gradually. I know of many people (through self help groups and websites) that have had withdrawal problems when coming off a/d's even after a lengthy period of tapering the dose. One problem I think, is the insistance by the manufacturers and by many GP's that the drugs are not addictive. So what does addictive mean? In general it means that a person takes a substance (or does a certain behaviour) to make them feel unnaturally high / good or better. Now I will agree that a/d's do not act in this sense. The thing is about a/d's is that with the problems associated with withdrawal, are people likely to still want to take them to avoid the withdrawal symptoms. This if you like is an inverse addictive sensation. The statistics also say that after a person has been treated for 1 depressive episode they have a significantly increased chance of relapse. So if a a/d medication works it is very likely one will be taken at some point in the future. If taking such a medication is the only choice then so be it. I would only take any a/d again as a totally last resort. I would completely advocate other treatments. These could be dietry (increasing lean meat, fish & protein to stimulate serotonin & norepinephrine), exercise (gym / cardiovascular or light tai chi / yoga type), meditation, psychotherapy / cognitive behavioural therapy or something similar. Even recent research into light therapy used to treat SAD has yeilded some encouraging results for people with atypical depression.

I was prescribed EffexorXR 2.5 years ago and eventually stabilized my medication at about 300mg per day and I would say it saved my life. It however, did begin to wear off after 1.5 years and the depression returned, not as mighty as before, but returned none the less. I ended up experimenting with Buspar, and other additonal anitanxiety meds, but to no avail. I finally quit EffexorXR cold turkey two weeks ago. Besides a slight dizzy feeling the first two days, I have noticed no difference in my depression or mood and no debilitating side effects. It makes me wonder if it was working at all. It has only been two weeks, I keep waiting for the big crash and have prepared myself by having my prescription filled but in smaller sized doses so that if the need arises I can start again.

Is there a possiblity that EffexorXR has not been working at all and that I have been essentially throwing good money away on a placebo? Is there anyway I could find this out?

Thanks Bebe,
I have replied to your email address directly.
I would welcome other people's opinions, especially those of you who have/are taking antidepressants, or know someone else who has/is.
I would like to point out that I am not medically qualified. However if you wish I can post comments or send emails and draw upon my own personal experience and those who I have talked with and also draw upon my knowledge gained from the media, internet and medical books / literature.
Stay well & keep smiling.
Paul

Who knows, maybe binaural beats do work, but then there is the possibility not. Antidepressants imo work for few people it is not worth the price. Latest research shows that experiments on patients with placebo/real medication, the ratio was hardly any different.

I will try this thing and see if it works for my depression, but I am really skeptical. Why have there been so few research about binaural beats, it has existed since over a hundred years ago. My only thought is because it pretty much is BS and hardly works.
